A Look Inside Studio Sessions | Kingston Studio Photographer
It was such a big dream of mine to have my own studio space, and in January of 2021, I was finally able to make that happen! Since then, I’ve had the opportunity to photograph so many different types of sessions in the studio, and it has been nothing short of magical.
If you’ve ever wondered what kinds of sessions work best in a studio setting — or whether the studio is the right choice for your family, here’s everything you need to know.
Why a Studio Space Makes Such a Difference
There’s something special about a dedicated studio. Unlike an outdoor location, a studio gives complete control over lighting, backdrops, and props, which means every session can be tailored specifically to the theme, season, or milestone being celebrated. As a Kingston studio photographer working out of a space right inside my own home, having this studio has allowed me to create a consistent, polished look for clients year-round, no matter what the weather is doing outside.
It’s also just a joy-filled space. Walking into the studio each day and setting it up for a new theme, whether that’s a cozy Christmas scene, a bright Valentine’s Day setup, or a sweet first-birthday “smash cake” backdrop, never gets old.
What Sessions Work Best in the Studio?
Since the studio is a smaller, intimate space, I’ve found that some sessions truly thrive there, while others are better suited to the outdoors.
Best for the Studio:
- Newborn sessions — with full control over temperature, lighting, and props, the studio is ideal for those classic, cozy, curled-up newborn poses
- Birthday and milestone sessions — including cake smashes, first birthdays, and other special milestones
- Themed seasonal sessions — Christmas, Valentine’s Day, and other holiday-inspired sessions
- Back-to-school sessions — a fun way to capture your child at each new school year
- Custom themed sessions — literally any theme you can dream up, we can likely bring it to life in the studio
Best Outdoors:
- Family sessions — because families are often larger groups, I still prefer to photograph these outdoors where there’s more room to move, play, and capture natural interaction between family members
- Birthday sessions for 2 and 3 year olds — active toddlers this age tend to do best with room to run, explore, and burn off energy, which makes an outdoor setting a better fit than the smaller studio space
The Beauty of a Themed Session
One of my favorite things about studio work is the ability to fully transform the space to match a theme. From soft, neutral newborn setups to bright and playful birthday backdrops to cozy, festive holiday scenes, the studio becomes a blank canvas every time. If you have a theme in mind, whatever it may be, chances are we can make it happen! Just bring your idea, and we’ll create something special together.
A Glimpse at Sessions Completed in the Studio
Since opening in 2021, the studio has hosted an incredible range of sessions, including:
- Newborn sessions
- First birthday and cake smash sessions
- Other milestone celebrations
- Back-to-school sessions
- Valentine’s Day sessions
- Christmas and holiday sessions
Each one has brought its own personality, color palette, and props, and it’s been such a joy watching families return to the studio again and again to mark new milestones and seasons.
