What to Wear for Family Pictures: A Complete Guide from Your Knoxville Family Photographer
One of the questions I get asked most often as a Knoxville family photographer is simple: “What should we wear?” It’s such a common source of stress for families, but it doesn’t have to be! With a little planning, choosing outfits for your family session can actually be one of the most fun parts of getting ready. Here’s my complete guide to help you look coordinated, comfortable, and completely like yourselves.
Start with a Color Palette, Not a “Matching” Outfit
The biggest myth about family photo outfits is that everyone needs to match exactly. In reality, the most timeless, frame-worthy family photos are coordinated, not matchy-matchy. Instead of putting everyone in the same shade of navy, choose a palette of 3–4 complementary colors and let each family member wear a different combination within that palette.
A few palettes that photograph beautifully in East Tennessee’s natural light:
- Neutral & Earthy: cream, camel, olive, and soft denim
- Warm Autumn: rust, mustard, clay, and cream
- Classic Jewel Tones: deep green, burgundy, navy, and blush
- Soft Spring: dusty blue, blush pink, sage, and white
Pinterest and Instagram are great tools for pulling together a palette ahead of time! Just search “family photo outfit color palette” for inspiration boards to guide you.
Layer in Texture and Pattern (Carefully)
Solid colors are the foundation, but a little texture (like a knit sweater, corduroy, chambray, or a subtle plaid) adds depth and visual interest without looking too busy. My rule of thumb is no more than one or two patterned pieces per family, and keep the scale of the pattern small to medium so it doesn’t overwhelm the photo. Save bold, large prints for accessories rather than a full outfit.
Dress for the Season and the Setting
Where your session takes place should absolutely influence what you wear.
- Outdoor sessions in a park or on a farm call for relaxed layers, boots, or comfortable flats — think denim, flannel, and cozy knits in fall, or breezy linen and cotton in spring and summer.
- Urban or downtown Knoxville sessions pair beautifully with slightly more polished pieces — a tailored jacket, midi dress, or clean button-down.
- In-home lifestyle sessions are the perfect time to keep things simple and cozy — soft knits, neutral loungewear, and bare feet all photograph wonderfully.
If you’re not sure what setting will photograph best for your family, that’s something we can talk through together when we plan your session.
Comfort Equals Better Photos
Here’s a secret every experienced photographer knows: outfits that are uncomfortable show up in your face. If a dress is itchy, if shoes are pinching, or if a toddler is fighting a scratchy tag all afternoon, it shows in the photos. Choose pieces that everyone can move, sit, and play in — genuine laughter and natural movement almost always make for the best images.
Tips for Dressing Kids (Without the Meltdown)
- Let your child have a small say in their outfit when possible — even choosing between two approved options can prevent a battle.
- Avoid brand-new shoes or clothes the day of the session; a “test run” beforehand means no unexpected chafing, blisters, or itchy tags.
- Pack a backup outfit in the car for little ones, just in case.
- Bows, hats, and simple accessories are a great way to tie a child’s outfit into the family palette without a full matching look.
What to Avoid
- Busy logos, graphic tees, or text on clothing — these date photos quickly and distract from faces.
- All-white or all-black outfits for the whole family — this can look flat and washed out in photos; mix in at least a couple of other tones.
- Neon or overly bright colors — these can reflect onto skin tones and are hard to color-balance.
- Clashing patterns — plaid, florals, and stripes can compete with each other if everyone wears one at the same time.
Let’s Plan It Together
As a Knoxville family photographer serving families throughout East Tennessee — including Farragut, Kingston, Harriman, and the surrounding areas — I love helping families feel confident and prepared long before the camera ever comes out. When you book your session, we’ll talk through location, season, and your family’s personal style so your outfits feel like you, not like a costume.
